# What is Stellar?

Stellar is a decentralized, public blockchain that provides developers with tools to create a diverse range of products, primarily focused on currencies and payments. The network is faster, more cost-effective, and significantly more energy-efficient than most blockchain-based systems. Stellar enables the creation, transfer, and trading of digital representations of all types of assets—whether dollars, pesos, bitcoin, NFTs, or virtually anything else.
